The 5 Most Beautiful Beaches in Costa Rica

Back in 2014, we were lucky enough to complete a road trip around the beautiful country of Costa Rica. For such a small country, there is a wealth of diversity to be found throughout. From the dry west coast to the jungles of the mountain interior…. If you are looking for a getaway, you really can’t go wrong with a Costa Rica vacation.

Costa Rica

One of the things we loved about Costa Rica was the great diversity of its beaches. Due to the geographical nature of Costa Rica, the variety is amazing as you travel from beach to beach. Here’s what we believe to be the 5 most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica.

Playa Escondido

This was probably our favourite out of all the beaches we visited while in Costa Rica. You’ll find it in Manuel Antonio National Park in the south west of the country. Firstly, the park has some of the best wildlife you can find in Central America. While we were there, we were lucky enough to get up face to face with a sloth. Secondly, the beach is in a sheltered bay that keeps the waves low and the beach in great condition. Lazing on the beach and listening to the water lap at the shore while watching howler monkeys fly from tree to tree, really is an amazing experience.

Playa Conchal

You’ll find this beach out near the most western point of Costa Rica. You’ll probably know this beach better as the Shell Beach due to the millions of tiny seashells that form the beach. Playa Conchal is also found in a bay, so the waves are usually low. This makes it a great beach for the kids, or even the adults who prefer quieter waters. It’s also one of the more popular location for weddings in Costa Rica. Beachside, sunset weddings are almost a nightly occurrence.

Playa Grande

This beach is perfect for surfers. The beach provides constant breakers and swells that will keep any boarder happy. You will constantly find good waves here all year round. The beach is also a nesting site for the leatherback turtle, so between April and October you won’t be allowed on the shore after sundown. If you are looking for a swim, you should try the northern end of the beach.

Playa Guiones

If you want to go for a stroll along the sand, this is the beach for you. Playa Guiones’s white sand stretches over 4 miles along the west coast of Costa Rica. This beach is a bit quieter than the beaches I’ve mentioned previously, which is great if you want the shoreline to yourself. You’ll be able to site back and watch the stunning sunset over the water. At low tide, you’ll find several large tide pools, which make excellent snorkeling, at the southern end.

Playa Avellana

You can find this beach just outside Tamarindo, which is a cool little beach town on the west coast. The locals call this place “little Hawaii” for one reason: big waves! Yes, if you want big waves, this is the place to go. Waves up to 20 feet can often be found here that will have the avid surfer drooling. You’ll find several beachfront bars where you can take a seat, grab a drink and just relax while listening to the tide roll in.

Those are just 5 of the stunningly beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. It wouldn’t have been hard to extend this list to 10 or even 20, but we had to draw the line somewhere. Costa Rica is an amazing place to visit. You must do it at least once in your life, so don’t miss out.
